Downtown construction set to close southbound lanes on portion of South Main Street for two years

All southbound lanes of South Main Street from East Market Street to University Avenue in Downtown Akron will close for two years on July 9 for the start of the Main Street Corridor Project. Northbound lanes and access to Lock 3 will remain open and will be in use July 11-14 for the Italian American Festival and July 16 for the All American Soap Box Derby Parade of Champions.

South High Street is the recommended detour to access Mill Street or Bowery Street, which will be open east and west for traffic crossing Main Street. The Main Street Corridor Project team will host a public meeting July 17 in Cascade Plaza from 4 to 6 p.m. to discuss overall project.

Also, due to the Ohio Canal Interceptor Tunnel beneath downtown, Ash Street will be closed between Dart Avenue to West Mill Street from June 29 to July 3. Traffic will detour along West Market and South Main streets.
