Motorcycle passenger dies after nighttime collision with deer

SUGAR CREEK TWP.: An encounter with a deer on the road left a woman riding a motorcycle dead late Thursday night just outside of Brewster.

Beach City residents Norman S. Winland, 49, and Marissa M. Winland, 36, were riding the white Harley Davidson XL833 south on State Route 93 when Norman Winland hit a deer that entered the road about a half mile south of Brewster, according to a news release from Lt. Leo Shirkey of the Ohio Highway Patrol’s Canton post. The motorcycle overturned, ejecting both the Winlands.

Norman Winland suffered minor injuries, and Marissa Winland suffered a severe head injury, Shirkey said. She was taken to Aultman Hospital, where she died as a result of her injuries.

Neither of the Winlands had been wearing a helmet.

Shirkey said in the release that alcohol and drugs were not a suspected factor in the collision.

Information about the deer was not available.

The crash remained under investigation Friday.
